What is Diamond Clarity?
Diamond clarity measures the presence of inclusions (internal characteristics) and blemishes (surface characteristics) in a diamond. These imperfections are evaluated under 10x magnification using specialized microscopes.
Most diamonds contain some inclusions or blemishes—perfectly flawless diamonds are extremely rare. The key to finding value is understanding which inclusions are invisible to the naked eye and which would be noticeable.
The Diamond Clarity Grading Scale
FL - Flawless
No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification. Extremely rare and commands premium pricing. Most buyers never see a flawless diamond.
IF - Internally Flawless
No inclusions visible under magnification, though surface blemishes may be present. Very rare and very expensive. Generally overkill for luxury purposes.
VVS1 & VVS2 - Very Very Slightly Included
Microscopic inclusions visible only to trained gemologists under magnification. Completely eye-clean to any observer. Commands premium pricing but offers diminishing value for most buyers.
VS1 & VS2 - Very Slightly Included
Minor inclusions visible only under magnification. This is the sweet spot. VS1 diamonds are typically eye-clean, while VS2 diamonds are usually eye-clean but may occasionally show inclusion visibility depending on the stone.
SI1 & SI2 - Slightly Included
Inclusions may be visible under magnification and occasionally to the naked eye. Many SI1 diamonds are eye-clean, making this an excellent value range. SI2 diamonds frequently show visible inclusions.
I1, I2, I3 - Included
Visible inclusions affecting transparency and appearance. Not recommended for luxury jewelry purchases.
Understanding Eye-Clean
Eye-clean is the critical concept for clarity. A diamond is eye-clean when inclusions are invisible to the naked eye under normal viewing conditions. An eye-clean SI1 diamond looks identical to a VVS1 diamond to any observer not using magnification.
This creates extraordinary value opportunities. Moving from VVS1 to SI1 eye-clean can save 30-40% on price with zero difference in daily appearance.
Important Note
Not all diamonds of the same clarity grade are equally eye-clean. Two SI1 diamonds may have different inclusion visibility. Always examine detailed clarity plots and view the diamond in person before purchasing.
Types of Inclusions
Different inclusion types vary in visibility and impact:
- Feathers: Internal fractures; typically less visible than other inclusion types
- Clouds: Groups of tiny particles; can affect transparency in larger concentrations
- Twinning Wisps: Growth patterns; usually not visible to the eye
- Needles: Thin crystal inclusions; may be visible depending on location and size
- Crystals: Other mineral crystals; visibility depends on location, size, and color
The location and visibility of an inclusion matters as much as the type. An inclusion hidden under a prong is less noticeable than one visible from the top.
Clarity and Diamond Transparency
While clarity measures specific inclusions, it doesn't directly measure transparency. A diamond with multiple small inclusions scattered throughout might have lower clarity grade but excellent transparency. Conversely, a concentrated cloud of inclusions might lower transparency despite a higher clarity grade.
This is why viewing the diamond in person is essential. Photograph and reports provide grades, but seeing the actual transparency requires direct observation.
The Clarity-Price Relationship
Clarity has a significant but non-linear price impact:
- FL to IF: 10-15% price difference
- IF to VVS1: 15-20% price difference
- VVS1 to VS1: 20-25% price difference
- VS1 to SI1 eye-clean: 25-35% price difference (excellent value opportunity)
- SI1 to I1: Variable depending on inclusion visibility
Clarity Recommendations
- Target VS1 or SI1 eye-clean: These grades deliver perfect appearance at 25-35% savings compared to VVS
- Examine the clarity plot: Review where inclusions are located; hidden inclusions matter less than visible ones
- View in person: Eye-cleanness is observable; never purchase SI1 without confirming it's eye-clean to you
- Consider cut and color first: Allocate budget to cut quality and color before chasing higher clarity grades
- Avoid I-grades: Even eye-clean I-grade diamonds sacrifice too much quality for the savings
The sweet spot for most luxury buyers is VS1 eye-clean or SI1 eye-clean. These grades preserve beauty while delivering significant savings that can be invested in better cut quality.
